Last week I turned 24. Here’s 24 things I want to remind myself of this year:
1. Don’t overthink things.
Nothing is as bad, or as serious, or as embarrassing as you think. It feels like every little thing we do, every mistake we make, is colossal, but it’s really never that deep. Remember; you are one person out of 8 billion, on a floating rock, in the middle of a never-ending galaxy. You will be fine.
2. Don’t be afraid to be embarrassing.
Again, it’s never that deep. Embarrassment is only real if you allow it to be.
3. Travel as much as possible.
You’re never going to be this free from responsibilities again. Money comes back, but experiences don’t.
4. It’s ok to not know what you’re doing.
Everyone says this, but it’s really true. We’re still constantly changing, and person you wanted to be last week may not be the same person this week. Don’t be afraid to try new things out, and there’s nothing wrong with hating them.
5. Everyone can be a bad person sometimes.
It’s good to be self-aware, but don’t be so hard on yourself.
6. Find your style.
This will save you money. If you know what you like, you won’t waste money on buying things you will never wear. And don’t buy into trends.
7. Learn how to budget.
It’s time to learn how to spend your money wisely and always try to have a little saved for a rainy day.
8. Invest in yourself.
Look after yourself, buy good skincare, get your nails done, spend money on clothes and shoes that will last.
9. Trust your intuition.
You always truly know. Trust yourself and you can’t go far wrong.
10. Your health is your wealth.
Eat properly and exercise often. You’re not a student who can only make beans on toast anymore.
11. Don’t stress.
It’ll give you wrinkles.
12. Don’t rush things.
Girl, you’re only 24. YOU HAVE TIME!
13. Make new friends.
It’s a lie that it’s hard to make friends in your 20s. Be open to meeting new people. They might end up being your best friends.
14. Try not to make enemies.
It’s hard but try your best — you don’t want to burn too many bridges. This doesn’t always apply, however. Some people deserve to be firmly placed in enemy category.
15. Don’t be afraid to cut people off.
You don’t need unnecessary stress. And if someone cuts you off, try not to take it too personally. You’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea.
16. Be a bitch.
Don’t let people walk all over you.
17. Be nice.
It’s nice to be nice (but sometimes you do have to be a bitch).
18. Don’t forget you’re young and hot.
Take advantage of it for as long as possible. You can be old and hot too, but don’t look back regretting not making the most of your youth.
19. Spend more time with your friends.
Boyfriends are fun and all, but don’t neglect friendships.
20. It’s ok to do nothing sometimes.
And you shouldn’t feel guilty.
21. Accept you were wrong.
About a lot of things (probably).
22. Accept that you actually know nothing.
As a teenager, I thought I knew everything. The older I get, the more I realise I don’t know anything.
23. Accept your past self.
Yes, she was cringy and thought she knew everything, but she got you to this point. And future you will definitely think the same thing about current you.
24. Accept that you’re always changing.
That’s the best thing about getting older.
